As you may imagine, it takes a village to run a nonprofit organization, and here in Oregon, you and your fellow PRSA members run three.
Over the last several years, all three chapters have experienced governance challenges to varying degrees, and in the last two years, your volunteer leaders have grown concerned with the sustainability of programs and services offered to members across our state due to these challenges.
So last December, the boards of the Greater Oregon, Oregon Capital and Portland Metro chapters formed a limited duration joint task force and appointed representatives to its executive committee to formally investigate whether our collective governance challenges would be solved by merging into one statewide chapter, thus sharing the workload and increasing member value. This month, the boards of all three chapters approved the committee’s recommendation: Merge our three chapters into one statewide organization.
But our journey isn’t over. The path forward is up to you and the other 318 members throughout our state. Would you like to merge our three chapters? We hope you’ll join the conversation at one of our virtual town hall meetings, through September, before casting your ballot on whether to approve the merger by approving the new bylaws. The polls open today: You should have received your ballot from SurveyMonkey on August 23 at the email address you have listed in your member profile at prsa.org. (Please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. The subject line was “Vote: PRSA Oregon Bylaws.”)
Finally, if you’d like to take a more active role in shaping the future of our society, we hope you’ll consider board or volunteer service in 2017, or in joining this committee.
