Winning your first Spotlight Award is an exciting moment, and the enthusiasm never wanes even when you’ve got two (or three or ten!) under your belt. For this special series, PRSA Portland asked some of our area’s biggest winners—those whose names are consistently called at every celebration—for their tips and tricks for Spotlight success.

What past Spotlight-winning project are you most proud of?
I am most proud of our PR team’s effort in winning the Ron Schmidt Community Involvement Award for Thriftway’s Plastics Recycling program.
What do you think is the key to Spotlight success?
The key to success is a compelling entry that still hits on all four points—research, planning, execution and evaluation.
Why should others enter the Spotlight awards?
Entering keeps you on your toes and focused on the reasons why you are doing a project or a campaign by establishing solid objectives and then going through research, planning, execution and evaluation.
What project do you plan to enter in this year’s awards?
I plan to enter one tactic and one business-to-business entry. They could not be farther apart in content but both exceeded their objectives. I also nominated a person for an Award of Distinction, which I try to do every few years. It does not take long and helps promote the public relations profession while recognizing exemplary colleagues.
